Why regular eye checks can change lives
Your eyes rarely complain. Unfortunately.
And that is precisely what makes many serious eye conditions so treacherous: they arrive quietly. No pain, no alarm, no obvious warning signal. Glaucoma steals the visual field from the outside in – so slowly that you barely notice. Macular degeneration changes the retina before your sight noticeably suffers. Diabetic retinal changes can be well advanced while you feel perfectly healthy.
The good news: anyone who sees an ophthalmologist regularly is one decisive step ahead of these silent conditions. With modern equipment such as OCT – a kind of high-precision camera for the retina – we detect tiny changes long before symptoms appear. Detected early, many eye conditions respond well to treatment.
Our recommendation: every two years from the age of 40, annually from 60. With risk factors such as diabetes, severe short-sightedness or a family history: earlier and more often.

Anti-VEGF therapy – the standard treatment for wet AMD – is now available at all six Argus Augenklinik locations in Lucerne, Sursee, Altdorf, Wohlen, Wolhusen and Hergiswil. In short: wherever you are at home.
What is behind it? Age-related macular degeneration affects the central area of the retina – precisely the part responsible for sharp reading, recognising faces and all the small things that make life beautiful. In the wet form, abnormal blood vessels grow and threaten vision. Anti-VEGF injections specifically inhibit this growth – and in many cases stabilise vision or even improve it.
Sounds unpleasant? It hardly is. The procedure takes a few minutes, is carried out under local anaesthetic and is well tolerated by most patients. The eye is carefully numbed beforehand – you will feel a slight sensation of pressure at most.
