Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases in which raised intraocular pressure damages the optic nerve. It is one of the most common causes of blindness worldwide and develops painlessly in most cases.
The visual field narrows gradually from the outside in. Many of those affected only notice the loss once considerable damage has already occurred. This is why regular check-ups are so important.
Risk factors include raised intraocular pressure (> 21 mmHg), a family history of the condition, severe refractive error, anatomical changes, diabetes and an age of over 40.
Glaucoma damage is irreversible – which is why acting early counts. The aim of treatment is to halt its progression and preserve the remaining vision.
Treatment options include pressure-lowering eye drops, laser treatments such as SLT (selective laser trabeculoplasty) or IT (iridotomy) and, at an advanced stage, surgical procedures. Glaucoma surgery may become necessary if other therapies are not sufficient.
At Argus Augenklinik, we measure intraocular pressure precisely, assess the optic nerve with OCT examinations, check the visual field and draw up your personal treatment plan.

Frequently asked questions
How often do I need a check-up?
Depending on the stage of the condition, every three to 12 months. Your doctor will set the check-up rhythm individually.
Does health insurance cover the costs?
Yes – glaucoma treatment with drops, laser or surgery is covered by health insurance.
Is glaucoma curable?
No – damage that has already occurred remains. With the right treatment, however, further progression can be stopped in many cases and new damage prevented.
Do I have to use eye drops for life?
For most patients, the answer is yes. The drops lower intraocular pressure permanently. SLT or IT laser treatment can reduce or replace the need for drops in certain cases.
Will I notice if I have glaucoma?
Usually not – and that is exactly what makes the condition so treacherous. Pain is often completely absent. Regular check-ups are the only reliable way to detect it early.
