Cataracts are the world’s most common cause of treatable blindness. They mainly affect people over 60, although younger patients can develop them, too.
Typical symptoms are blurred or clouded vision, sensitivity to glare, altered colour perception and difficulty reading or driving. The condition progresses slowly – often, those affected only realise much later how much their vision has deteriorated.
Common early signs: your prescription changes rapidly, colours appear faded or yellowish, halos around light sources at night, double vision in one eye.

Cataract surgery is one of the most frequent and safest surgical procedures in the world. At Argus Augenklinik, we perform cataract operations every day – with state-of-the-art intraocular lenses and a minimally invasive technique (incision under 2 mm).
After the procedure, most patients see noticeably more clearly as early as the next day. Many no longer need glasses – or only reading glasses. We discuss the choice of the right intraocular lens with you individually.

Initial examination & consultation
We examine your eyes thoroughly, discuss the right lens and plan the procedure together with you. We take the time to answer all your questions. -
Preparation on the day of surgery
We dilate your pupil with eye drops; a general anaesthetic is not necessary. The procedure usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. -
The operation
We remove the clouded lens using a minimally invasive technique (incision under 2 mm) and insert the artificial lens. The procedure is painless and carried out under local anaesthetic. -
Aftercare & check-ups
The first check-up takes place the following day; further appointments depend on how your healing progresses. Improved vision is usually noticeable within 24 to 48 hours.
Frequently asked questions
What does cataract surgery cost?
Cataract surgery is covered by health insurance. Premium lenses, however, require an additional payment. We inform you transparently about all extra costs before the procedure.
When can I drive again?
In most cases, after one to two days. Your doctor will give you an individual recommendation based on how your healing is progressing.
Will I be free of glasses afterwards?
That depends on the intraocular lens you choose. With premium lenses (EDOF or multifocal lenses), most patients are largely independent of glasses afterwards.
Do I have to go to hospital?
No – the procedure is carried out on an outpatient basis. You come in at your appointment time and can go home again after the observation period. Please arrange for someone to collect you.
How long does the operation take?
The operation usually takes 10 to 15 minutes. Including preparation and post-operative observation, you should allow approx. one to two hours.
